Starting questions for this lesson:

  • "Why do we have gums?"
  • "which creatures can grow new teeth?"

A video explaining for children how and why we have teeth:

YouTube

Humans have 20 primary teeth from the age of 6 months to 3 years, then they grow their 28 adult teeth as their jaws get bigger.

Growing New Teeth

Humans and most other mammals are known as diphyodont in that we only grow two sets of teeth. However, there are creatures that can grow new teeth and are known as polyphyodont. Lots of creatures grow new teeth including:

  • Sharks
  • Crocodiles
  • Geckos
  • Kangaroo
  • Elephants

Some sharks can shed up to 35,000 teeth in their life time!

Gums

Gums are important because they support the teeth and provide it with a blood supply so its nerves can function. Teeth can tell when the food they are chewing is hot or cold, and this comes from the nerves inside the tooth.
